You have been raised to life with Christ, so set your hearts on the things that are in heaven, where Christ sits on his throne at the right side of God. 2 Keep your minds fixed on things there, not on things here on earth. 3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 Your real life is Christ and when he appears, then you too will appear with him and share his glory! Colossians 3:1-4 (GNB)
Do you notice how many times the phrase ‘with Christ’ appears in the above verses?
In Christ, With Christ and For Christ is a phrase I hope is now well known in CBC. With Christ 2014 will be a good year.
‘Raised to life with Christ’ (verse 1) tells us of a spiritual reality that has practical benefits. Without Christ we are all living in sin. Once we accept Christ we enter into a new life in Christ (1 Corinthians 5:17). Yet this is only the beginning of the journey.
As you make your way into 2014 make sure you make it with Christ.
Have you ever sat with someone in a room cracking jokes they do not seem to find funny and making comments that don’t register with the person. You finally spurt out in frustration ‘are you with me?’, I know you are here in the room but are you with me?
To be with Christ means you listen to Him, follow him, remain secure in him and have your confidence in him. There is no point in being in Christ and still walking with the world – embracing fear, anxiety, stored up anger and such like traits that are not merits of a life that is ‘hidden with Christ in God‘ (verse 3). Once you accept Jesus as your Lord and saviour you have the strength, from the Holy Spirit, to walk with Christ.
It is a choice you have to make.
We need to start adjusting our thought pattern to match those of someone whose life is hidden with Christ in God. Do you know what the bible teaches about worry, fear, money, your protection, your attitude to loving people in Christ and even those who are not in Christ? We are supposed to love them all – and God has made this possible for those who are with Christ (Romans 5:5). But we need to get ‘with Him’. For more on this please listen to the talk online
The best advantage you have to being with Christ is that you have an eternal hope. When Christ appears again, or you go to meet him, ‘you too will appear with him and share his glory!’ (verse 4).
In summary, Colossians 3:1-4 sums up rather succinctly the merits of being ‘with Christ’. In verse 1 it tells us that we are raised to life with Christ – a spiritual reality that brings us into a relationship with Christ and changes the way we exist. In verse 3 it reveals that your life is hidden with Christ in God – this is a declaration of the guidance, protection and concern God has for you. Finally in verse 4 we are reassured that when Christ appears (or we go to meet him) you too will appear with him and share his glory.
In short, you past, present and future is covered once you decide to start walking with Christ. Over the following months during our Sunday services we will explore what it means to be with Christ in the different areas of our life on this earth..
It seems to me you get a lot of benefit from a little effort of being with Christ in 2014.
